Monte Carlo Movie Review
Monte Carlo is a 2011 American adventure-romantic comedy film starring Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, and Katie Cassidy as three friends who pose as wealthy socialites in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The film is based on the novel Headhunters by Jules Bass and directed by Thomas Bezucha. It was released on July 1, 2011 by 20th Century Fox.
The film follows Grace Bennett (Gomez), a Texas high-school student who works as a waitress to save money for a trip to Paris with her best friend Emma Perkins (Cassidy) and her stepsister Meg Kelly (Meester). However, their trip turns out to be a disappointment, as they are ripped off by their tour guide and left behind at the Eiffel Tower. They seek shelter in a posh hotel, where Grace is mistaken for Cordelia Winthrop-Scott (also played by Gomez), a British heiress who looks exactly like her. Grace decides to take advantage of the situation and flies to Monte Carlo with Cordelia's luggage, dragging Emma and Meg along. There, they enjoy the luxury and glamour of Cordelia's life, while also meeting romantic interests: Theo Marchand (Pierre Boulanger), the son of a philanthropist; Prince Domenico (Giulio Berruti), a charming royal; and Riley (Luke Bracey), an Australian backpacker. However, their adventure soon gets complicated when Cordelia's aunt Alicia (Catherine Tate) and the real Cordelia show up, threatening to expose their deception.
Monte Carlo received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the lead actresses and the scenic locations, but criticized the clichéd plot and the lack of originality . The film earned over $39 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. It was nominated for two Teen Choice Awards: Choice Movie Actress: Comedy for Gomez and Choice Movie: Comedy. The film also features the song "Who Says" by Selena Gomez & the Scene and several songs by Mika.
If you are looking for a light-hearted and fun movie to watch with your friends or family, Monte Carlo might be a good choice. It is not a masterpiece of cinema, but it is entertaining and enjoyable. You can watch the trailer [here] or buy the DVD or Blu-ray [here].
